Caminito del Rey

Caminito del Rey

The nearby “Koningspad” is an attractive walk. To get to the start of the Caminito, at the old power station, you first walk through a pedestrian tunnel and then through the forest. After the starting point, you walk on a wooden path that hangs on the mountainside above the River Guadalhorce. After a few kilometers you enter the hidden valley. After the valley you walk again on a wooden path for the last part of the gorge. You cross this, via a suspension bridge, in the direction of El Chorro to take the bus back to the starting point.

The History of “The King’s Path”:
The path was built around 1901 to make the transport of goods and personnel to and from the power station between El Chorro and Gaitanejo waterfalls easier and faster. In 1905, after a construction period of 4 years, the power station was officially opened.
The trail is 3 kilometers long, about one meter wide and is 100 meters above the adjacent river. Unfortunately, it had fallen into disrepair and had become a perilous climb. The path has been reopened after repairs have been carried out.

Length approx. 8 km.
